Kentucky Coordinated School Health
Providing Professional Development
to Classroom Teachers
On February 23, 2010, the Coordinated School Health Team at the Kentucky Departments of Education (KDE) and Public Health (KDPH) provided professional development on nutrition education to 73 middle and high school teachers and community partners. This event was a collaborative event among numerous partners: a state university, the KDE Division of Curriculum, and the Pennyrile Allied Community Services Nutrition Outreach and Wholeness (PACS NOW) and the University of Kentucky (UK) Extension program funded by the USDA Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Ed program.
The coordinated school health team provided information on the coordinated school health model, while the consultant from the Division of Curriculum educated the teachers on the national health education standards, as well as Kentucky standards. Two faculty members from the Department of Consumer and Family Sciences at Western Kentucky University taught the nutrition content, in addition to several nutrition education teaching strategies and activities. Finally, UK Extension provided information to participants on nutrition resources available from their agency. PACS NOW and UK Extension provides nutrition education to schools and has a wide variety of resources for schools and teachers. They will provide some follow up to qualifying schools.
The participants were all very appreciative of the day. They especially liked the new teaching strategies they learned, and the handouts and materials that were given to them to take back to their classroom and use.
Follow up and support will be provided by the CSH team to the teachers. A follow up protocol has been developed utilizing resources from the Professional Development Partnership at Rocky Mountain Center. Participants completed an evaluation at the event and will also be asked to provide additional information throughout the next year regarding how the information is carried over to their classroom.
