Guam HIV Prevention
Improving HIV/AIDS prevention teaching strategies in schools
Most of our health teachers are faced with very limited access to current health and physical education information to improve their instructional lesson plans and increase student academic performance.
Through the CDC/DASH cooperative agreement, the Guam HIV Prevention Team consists of two school health educators and one HIV project director.
We were given the opportunity to attend national conferences to continue to gather current information to develop instructional plans, enhance teaching methodologies and strategies, and apply them to their fullest in order to increase the student academic success rate.
To support and plan creative approaches to improve teaching strategies in classrooms, school health curriculum and activities, HIV/AIDS, STD, and teen pregnancy prevention curriculum, the Guam Team facilitated several professional development training opportunities within the last year for school health cadres in Guam.
From mid-2009 into 2010, the Guam Team has provided:
Guam Juvenile Justice Conference 2009 - HIV presentation and materials were disseminated to approximately 75 participants, including 25 health educators and five (5) University of Guam students
Four health curriculum workshops on HIV/AIDS and STD, consisting of 11 health teachers, guidance counselors at two school sites, 110 school staff, and students.
Two suicide education workshops on Guam, for approximately 145 school health teachers and other agency health staff.
School health profiles workshop for principals and lead health teachers; approximately 25 school participants were reached.
In collaboration with a community-based organization, a basic HIV/AIDS presentation at three (3) middle school sites; approximately 156 teachers and students were successfully reached.
