Maine HIV Prevention
They Said it Couldn’t Be Done - Water Finds its Way Aaround a Rock
Addressing youth at disproportionate risk for chronic disease became a reality as Maine’s Coordinated School Health Programs (CSHP) identified priority School Administrative Units (SAUs) based on poverty status, academic test scores, and county health data. Each priority SAU was offered the opportunity to participate in a three-year grant to implement the CSHP approach. Seven School Administrative Units (SAUs) accepted the initial 2009 offer, including Maine’s three tribal schools. Each SAU agreed to rigorous outcomes as a result of precision interventions. Professional development events were designed to provide the necessary skill development.
In the past six months, these pioneering and courageous SAUs have designated a CSHP lead, created a School Health Leadership Team (SHLT), participated in the School Health Index (SHI) and School Health Profiles (SHP), and established a physical activity pilot program. They have also made progress on creating an action plan to strengthen their Wellness and Tobacco Policies and develop implementation plans. Maine plans to offer another round of three-year grants to establish a second cohort of priority SAUs this spring.
