Seattle HIV Prevention
World AIDS Day: HIV Prevention Forum
The Lifelong AIDS Alliance invited us in 2001 to partner in an exciting World AIDS Day event sponsored by MTV and Levi’s held at the Experience Music Project. MTV was producing the afternoon program in Seattle and a sister program, in Johannesburg, South Africa. About 300 Seattle students were guests at this high profile event.
Seattle schools and Lifelong AIDS Alliance have continued to sponsor a World AIDS Day event every year since. The length of the program, the sponsors, the targeted objectives have changed over time. The new day-long event has been voraciously sponsored by the City of Seattle, Parks and Recreation, CDC-DASH, Comcast, U.S. Bank and the Langston Hughes Cultural Center. It is attended by 125-180 students from the highest risk high schools. It takes place in early November; this allows each school team time to prepare a World AIDS Day Program for back at their own schools. During the day-long kick-off event, student teams participate in educational presentations and choose workshops (theatre, poetry, music, and art) that allow them to create messages and programs for their buildings.
